Doctoral Consortium
The CHI 97 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for a group of Ph.D. students to explore together their research interests in an interdisciplinary workshop with a group of established researchers.
The consortium has the following objectives:
- to provide a setting for mutual feedback on participants' current research, and guidance on future research directions
- to develop a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research
- to contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers and conference events.
The Consortium will be conducted in a workshop format. The Consortium takes place over the two days preceding the main conference, beginning on Saturday evening with a welcome reception and continuing until Monday evening. Student participants in the Consortium receive complimentary conference registration and partial travel reimbursement.
Review Process
As with other CHI 97 workshops, the Consortium organizing committee will select participants on the basis of their anticipated contribution to the workshop goals. We look forward to a diverse group of students who will explore together the theme of "Looking to the Future", reflecting a wide range of approaches to the study of human-computer interaction. Student participants typically have settled on thesis directions, usually with a research proposal accepted by their thesis committee.
Format
To apply as a student participant in the Doctoral Consortium, prepare a submission package consisting of an Extended Abstract, Additional Information, and a Letter of Recommendation.
Prepare a two page thesis summary, suitable for publication in the CHI 97
Extended Abstracts. It must be in the Conference Proceedings format.
Provide additional information on your background and relevant experience. This should include the information in a curriculum vita, plus additional information which may indicate your potential contribution to the Consortium.
Provide also a letter of recommendation from your thesis advisor. This must include an assessment of the current status of your thesis research, and an expected date for thesis submission.
Upon Acceptance
All applicants to the Consortium will be notified by the end of November 1996.
Thesis summaries of accepted student participants will be published in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts and in the CHI 97 Electronic Publication.
Author Kits containing detailed instructions on how to submit camera-ready and electronic materials for publication will be mailed with notifications of acceptance. These materials are due by 3 January 1997.
At the Conference
A special Poster Session is planned for doctoral student contributions. Your submitted thesis outline will automatically be considered for this poster session, unless you indicate otherwise.
Submissions
- Your submission must be in English.
- Electronic and fax submissions are not accepted.
- Submissions which arrive after the deadline will not be considered.
- Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications.
- Responsibility for permissions to use video, audio or pictures of identifiable people rests with you, not CHI 97.
