How to Produce the Electronic Document

Deadline

If we do not have an electronic version of your submission(s) by the deadline, your work cannot be included in the electronic publication.

The deadlines are 15 December 1996 for Papers, Technical Notes, and Design Briefings, and 3 January 1997 for all other classes (Extended Abstracts).

Electronic Copies of the Proceedings and Extended Abstracts

(This document is also available at the CHI 97 Web site at https://chi1997.acm.org/call/electronic ).

CHI 97 is once again making an electronic version of its Proceedings and Extended Abstracts volumes available. To this end, we need to receive electronic versions of your material to include in the Electronic Publication.

Contacting the CHI 97 Electronic Publications Team

If you find that you need help with this process, please contact us immediately, either by emailing:
chi97-ep-help@acm.org
or calling the CHI 97 Conference Office, so that we can assist you with getting your work included.

Steps for Converting Your Document into an Electronic Version

We ask authors to convert their documents into HTML (HyperText Markup Language) format.

There are many books, documents and programs that can support your doing this. An overview of tools helping you in the conversion task can be found on the web at: http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Web/HTML_Converters/.

For a good introduction on HTML, see http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.html

Use of HTML tags

Please do not use browser-specific or other non-standard HTML tags - we wish the electronic publication to be accessible to as many as possible. In particular do not use frames. Tables are acceptable. If in doubt, please contact us.

Format of the HTML file

In order to help us in processing submissions, please ensure that your file has the following format:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>The title of your work as it appears in your camera-ready submission</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<H1>The title of your work as it appears in your camera-ready submission</H1>
<ADDRESS>
<STRONG>Author's name</STRONG><BR>
Author's address line 1<BR>
Etc.
</ADDRESS>
<P>
<ADDRESS>
and so on for other authors, in the same format
</ADDRESS>
<H2>ABSTRACT</H2>
Etc: the body of your article.

</BODY>
</HTML>
Use <H2> for top-level headings, <H3> for the next level, and so on.

Just as with the printed versions, we wish to create a publication with a uniform look. Please try to adhere to this style. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

File Naming Conventions

To allow us the maximum flexibility in using and transferring files, please use the following naming conventions:

Use the first two or three initials of the contact author's name, followed by a hyphen, a 3-character label for the file, and a three-letter file extension identifying the format.

Graphics files should be in GIF or JPEG format. Please use the following extensions:

.gif
for gif files
.jpg
for JPEG files
.htm
for HTML files
So for instance, John M. Smith's submission might include:
jms.htm
The submission
jms-fg1.gif
Figure 1 as a gif file
jms-tb1.gif
Table 1 as a gif file
If a contact author is contact author for more than one submission, then the hyphen should be replaced with a digit identifying the submission:
jms1.htm
jms1fg1.gif
jms1tb1.gif
If you have extra material in addition to your camera-ready submission that you think might be useful in your electronic version, please contact us so that we can arrange for the extra material to be reviewed.

Transferring Files to CHI 97

Please create a text file with each submission, giving: Use the extension "txt" for this file, for instance, jms.txt.

Email this file to

chi97-ep-submission@acm.org
Then transfer your files to us, including the .txt file above, preferably by ftp to:
ftp.acm.org

Login: chi97
Password: submission

If you need help with this process, please contact us!

Although we prefer to receive your submission by ftp, if you don't have access to ftp, you may email it to us at chi97-deliver@acm.org. We can accept most styles of email compression and packing, but if in doubt, please contact us.

As a last resort, you can send us your files on floppy disk. In this case, please include a print-out of your descriptive text file described above.

Thank you!
