How do I make sure that my poster presentation is appealing to CHI 97 conference attendees?

Make your poster appealing and interesting but above all, make sure it is easy to read - from a distance. Many people may be trying to read your poster simultaneously. Try to arrange the information vertically so that viewers do not have to scan long horizontal portions of the display space.

Rather than
Fonts for text should be at least 24 point. Use mixed case (sentence capitalization) and an easy to read font (times, palatino or other serif font). A good size for titles is 72 point font. Ornamental, serif fonts in call capitals is fine for titles.

Color can be used either as a background or foreground for your poster. Accents in various colors are also appealing.

Graphics can also be used to convey information quickly and easily. Consider using illustrations, drawings, graphics or photographs where appropriate.

How much space will I have to display my poster?

You will have display space approximately 2.5 m by 1.2 m. You will also have 1/2 of a 6 foot table to use for handouts or contact information.

What should I use the table space for?

You may wish to bring handouts of papers or copies of your poster display for CHI conference attendees to take away with them. You might consider having a supply of business cards for people to take, as well as a place for interested attendees to leave business cards. Sheets of paper or a notebook can also be placed on the table for people to leave contact information or messages.

You may also use your table to display artifacts pertaining to your poster presentation. Please note that there will be no SECURITY in the room. DO NOT leave valuables at your poster when you are not there.

Where will the poster presentations be?

Posters will be displayed in the CHI 97 Commons area. Conference breaks will take place here from 10:30 - 11:30 AM and from 4:00 - 4:30 PM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the conference. This is a large area with food, exhibits and other activities as well.

When do I setup my poster?

Posters need to be up by 10:30 AM Tuesday morning. This is the first break and the first time the room will be open to the public. Interactive poster authors may have access to the room Monday, 2-7 PM and Tuesday, 8-10:30 AM. There will be a security guard at the door but your name will be on the list of those people who are allowed entrance to the room prior to the Tuesday morning break.

What materials will be supplied for setting up my poster?

Push pins to tack your poster to the poster display space will be available. If you anticipate needing any more supplies, please bring them with you or purchase them in Atlanta.

How will I know where to display my poster?

A member of the CHI 97 Informal Presentations committee or a student volunteer will be present in the room. This person will have a list of the numbered space where your poster is to be displayed.

Will the posters be grouped, and if so, how?

The posters will be arranged in some logical order. Until we know what poster presentations are accepted, we won't know exactly what the order will be.

When will the interactive poster presentations be held?

One of the poster authors is required to be at the poster during the Wednesday morning break (10:30 - 11:30 AM). In addition, you may wish to be present at other breaks. Poster presenters are encouraged to take any opportunities they can to interact with other CHI attendees. A good idea is to post times that you will be at your poster on your display space.

Do I need to take my poster display down?

Only if you want the display materials. Otherwise, the materials will be removed and disposed of during general conference cleanup activities. This will start immediately after the closing plenary Thursday.
