Late-Breaking Results and Informal Presentations

These presentations share ongoing work that may be communicated in a short talk, interactive poster or interactive demonstration format. For example, a research project in which preliminary results have been obtained and the project members seek feedback from their colleagues in the HCI community, would be a good candidate for this category of submission. By setting a very late submission date for this category -- approximately two months prior to the CHI 97 conference -- we hope to elicit presentations of work that is at once timely and still in a state to be influenced by questions and discussion from CHI 97 attendees. Submitters in this category must provide a camera-ready Extended Abstract in CHI 97 Conference Format. The abstracts will be lightly reviewed and accepted on the basis of quality, interest value, as well as the availability of conference space and resources. Accepted abstracts will be published in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts.

In keeping with the conference theme of "Looking to the Future", we especially encourage work that:

Types Of Presentations

Social Action Posters

Social action posters provide examples of ways in which the CHI community can use their talents to influence the future through social action. We encourage submissions that illustrate the impact that this work can have on the future of our local, regional, national, or international communities.

Interactive Posters

Research or experiences that are best conveyed in graphical format are good candidates for this category, for example, descriptions of work that rely significantly on screen shots or diagrammatic visuals. Projects for which the author is seeking significant attendee comment would also be good candidates for this forum.

Note that in addition to Social Action and Interactive Posters submitted at the late deadline, authors of Papers, Technical Notes, and Videos will be invited to prepare Interactive Poster presentations of their material, to create a richer and more varied interactive presentations program.

Short Talks

This category is intended for material best conveyed in lecture format. Material that when fully developed would be submitted as a Paper or Technical Note might be a good candidate for this category.

Short Demonstrations

Demonstrations of partially or recently developed systems may also be submitted for informal presentation. However, authors should be aware that resource requirements are generally more severe for scheduling demonstrations, and some proposals may be rejected solely based on lack of resource.

Review Process

Submissions will be reviewed for content and presentation by two or three reviewers. For all submissions except Social Action Posters, reviewers will judge the quality of the proposal with respect to originality, importance and generality of contribution, and soundness of rationale. Proposals will also be judged with respect to suitability for the type of presentation proposed.

Proposals for Social Action posters will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field using criteria different from the standard CHI criteria. Does the poster describe a social action project clearly? Does it explain how a viewer can find out more information, carry out a similar project, or make a contribution? Will the graphic presentation encourage people to explore the material and engage in discussion with the presenter?

Format

Proposal

Prepare a two page camera-ready Extended Abstract, suitable for publication in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts. It must be in the Conference Proceedings format, and must contain the title, authors, contact information, keywords, abstract, body, and references. For Interactive Posters and Social Action Posters, a one-page bird's eye view of the overall poster layout must be included; this will not be part of the Extended Abstract.

Electronic Version

Submissions must include an electronic version of the Extended Abstract. It should be provided on a disk (PC or Mac). The disk should have a label indicating the disk's type (PC or Mac), the primary author, the title of the submission, and the format of the file on the disk. Acceptable formats are listed on Cover Page Three. Make sure that you indicate also the format of electronic submission on Cover Page Three.

Upon Acceptance

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-February 1997, in time to take advantage of the conference's early registration deadline. The abstracts for accepted presentations will be published in a special section of the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts.

Please note that due to publication schedules, revisions to submitted camera-ready abstracts will not be possible. We therefore encourage authors to take the time to perfect their descriptions, both for the quality of the publication and the likelihood of acceptance.

As for other conference elements, authors will be expected to provide electronic versions of their extended abstracts.

At the Conference

Each accepted Interactive Poster or Social Action Poster will have display space (approximately2.5 m by 1.2 m), with a table for other materials. Poster author(s) will be expected to be present at scheduled times for informal discussions at their posters.

Accepted Short Talks or Demonstrations will be presented in small rooms conducive to audience participation, and will be scheduled for 10 minutes of presentation with 5 minutes of discussion.

Submissions

  1. Your submission must be in English.
  2. Electronic and fax submissions are not accepted.
  3. Submissions which arrive after the deadline will not be considered.
  4. Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications.
  5. Responsibility for permissions to use video, audio or pictures of identifiable people rests with you, not CHI 97.
  6. We strongly suggest the use of express mail or a courier service, for speedy delivery. Customs labels should bear the words "Educational materials with no commercial value."
