For More Information

Electronic versions of additional materials useful for preparing a submission are available via this site, or by automatic e-mail server by sending e-mail to chi97-send-sigs@acm.org

CHI 97 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) enable groups sharing an interest to meet informally for an hour or two of discussion at the conference. CHI 97 provides meeting facilities and will advertise SIG meetings to the rest of the conference. Proposals will be accepted until the conference opens on a `space-available' basis. Proposals received by the deadline will be advertised in the final program if accepted. SIGs accepted after that date will be announced only at the conference.

Following the conference, SIG organizers are encouraged to submit an article summarizing the SIG for publication in the SIGCHI Bulletin. Additionally several SIGs have led to proposals for successful workshops at subsequent CHI conferences.

Review Process

SIG proposals will be reviewed by a committee, with acceptance based on the relevance of the theme to the field.

The success of a SIG depends on organizers providing effective leadership and planning. Potential SIG organizers are encouraged to contact the Special Interest Groups Co-Chairs before submitting a proposal to discuss their ideas and any questions they may have.

Format

You should prepare a Proposal which will be used in the review process, an Extended Abstract to be published in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts if the SIG is accepted, and an Electronic Version of the Extended Abstract to be published in the CHI 97 electronic publication if the SIG is accepted.

Proposal

Prepare a one-page proposal for review purposes describing how the SIG discussion will be organized.

Extended Abstract

Prepare a one-page summary describing the SIG, suitable for publication in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts. It should begin with title, leader, leader contact information and key words, and continue with a summary of the topic, issues and goals. It must be prepared in the Conference Proceedings Format except that no abstract is required.

Electronic Version

Electronic versions of accepted SIG Summaries will be published in the CHI 97 Electronic Publication. They are due at the same time as the rest of the submission.

The electronic version of the Extended Abstract must be provided on a disk (PC or Mac). The disk should have a label indicating the disk's type (PC or Mac), the primary author, the title of the submission, and the format of the file on the disk. Acceptable formats are listed on Cover Page Three. Make sure that you indicate also the format of electronic submission on Cover Page Three.

Upon Acceptance

For proposals received by the deadline, authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-February 1997. Note that because of the late submission deadline, there will be no opportunity to prepare a new version of the Extended Abstract, so your submission material must be prepared carefully.

The summaries of accepted SIGs received after the deadline will not be published.

Submissions

  1. Your submission must be in English.
  2. Electronic and fax submissions are not accepted.
  3. Submissions which arrive after the deadline will not be published if they are accepted.
  4. Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications.
  5. Responsibility for permissions to use video, audio or pictures of identifiable people rests with you, not CHI 97.
  6. We strongly suggest the use of express mail or a courier service, for speedy delivery. Customs labels should bear the words "Educational materials with no commercial value. "
