Videos
THE CHI 97 Video Program is an opportunity to present work that relies on dynamic presentation. Videos can address any area of HCI including visual design, innovative interaction techniques, multimedia, usability testing, and design techniques. In keeping with the CHI 97 conference theme, "Looking To The Future", particularly appropriate topics this year include enabling technologies for better HCI, future paradigms for interaction, novel research methods, new work practices, emerging technologically enabled cultures, HCI in developing countries, computing technology and children, HCI for education and education about HCI.
Videos are also an ideal medium for presenting visions of the future. We encourage submissions of this type which go beyond the domains of office work and western life-style aspirations. We are looking for well researched portrayals of possible forms and functions of computing technology in a wide variety of cultures, activities and environments together with a diversity of user populations. In the spirit of the conference theme we will also consider videos which offer analysis and deconstruction of past envisionments of the future of HCI.
Review Process
Videos will be reviewed by international experts. Accepted videos will be selected on the basis of their interest to members of the human-computer interaction community, their technical content, and how well they communicate the purpose and impact of the work. They must have suitable production quality.
Format
Videos should be from 2 to 8 minutes in length. Stricter acceptance criteria will be applied to videos exceeding 8 minutes. We will endeavor to accept any standard video format but please check the CHI 97 web page, or contact the video chairs, for full details.
In determining legibility and visibility of detail, submitters should take into account a slight loss of quality in the final video program due to copying, and due to format conversion where necessary.
Prepare a two-page summary of the video, suitable for publication in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts. It should contain video title and author(s), contact
information, keywords, a 100-word abstract, and a text describing the video's
content. It must be prepared in the Conference Proceedings format.
Both the Video and the Extended Abstract should be designed as complementary but separate presentations that can be viewed or read independently of each other.
Submitters are strongly encouraged to refer to the "Guide for Successful Video Submissions" before preparing their video. This guide is available electronically (see For More Information) and available in print from the video chairs.
In order to assist submitters who are not familiar with video preparation, the video chairs will organize a rapid expert review of written video scripts received at the Send To address by 24 June 1996. Only advice will be offered with no guarantee that the final video will be accepted.
Upon Acceptance
Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-November 1996. Some authors of successful submissions may also be invited to submit a supporting Interactive Poster presentation ora Demonstration to allow delegates the opportunity to attend an interactive session at the conference and discuss the work with the presenter.
If the video is accepted it will be included in the CHI 97 Video program which will be shown at the conference, and be available to all attendees. After the conference it will be published, archived and sold by ACM.
The primary author of each accepted video will receive an Author Kit with Copyright release forms and detailed instructions on how to submit the camera-ready and electronic materials for publication. These materials are due by 3 January 1997.
